A memorial service like no other

Directly after the funeral service was the memorial service. The day Raquel went to be with Messiah our friend Kristi came to our home. I was surprised when she pulled in the driveway because I didnt know Terry had asked her to come over to document what she wanted for the memorial service.

What Terry came up with was truly awesome. She had the whole order of the service laid out including scriptures, songs, and testimonies. Those providing testimonies only had one day to prepare as did those asked to sing.

When we first arrived we started a slide show that contained just some of the pictures taken by our friend Alyson. The slides were shown in rotation with the song “I can only imagine” playing in the background. What I didn't know was David, Kristi’s husband and Alyson had stayed up almost all night putting that show together! Talk about LOVE.

I took my seat at the front pew as I watched the slides. They were very difficult to watch but they beautifully showed the story of what happened those ten days at the hospital.

What I didnt realize was how many people had come into the temple while the slide show was playing.

The ceremony contained testimonies from both of our Rabbis and their wives, Kristi and David, Ari and Donna, Barbara, Alyson and Bob, and others. At the very end it was my and my daughters turn to speak. When I got up on the podium and turned around I was in shock. The temple was nearly FULL! That means that there was close to 300 people present for a memorial service of a little girl that NEVER stepped foot outside her hospital room. Can you imagine that?

My eight year old daughter got up to share some of the most poignant words I had ever heard. She spoke clearly and without fault. I was so very proud of her.

Then it was my turn. As I looked up I was overwhelmed again by the outpouring of God’s love for my family. Hundreds had turned out to show us their support and to tell us how much this little one had touched their lives.

I shared a little of what Raquel did and who she was by explaining why she was.

After the service we went downstairs for a “pot luck” dinner. What I saw was over the TOP! A completely coordinated and organized meal event with a dessert table, table decorations, meats, salads, goodies etc. We had people there serving juice and coffee. I cant put into words what that meant to us. This wasnt a time of pain but a party!

Since the service I have many tell me they have NEVER seen anything like it. Including our senior Rabbi who has been in ministry for over 30 years. The holy spirit was so strong in the place that many hearts were touched by the testimonies and brave little girl named Raquel.

I welcome those that were present to share what that service and our little girl meant to them.

Terry,

I don't know what to say, to write, to communicate, because nothing is sufficient. The impact you have had, Raquel has had, is beyond what you even imagine.

You and Gary are incredible and a true inspiration. I can only say I send my thoughts, my love, my prayers, and will think of you often. We never did get together. I know the time is not right but someday ....
Easter blessing to you, Gary and the children.

Love,
Chris H
